Privacy Policy
Black Swan Reading — by Black Swan Learning LLC
Effective Date: March 19, 2026
Our Commitment: Black Swan Reading is a children’s educational application designed to teach reading. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all users, especially children. We comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent.
1. Who We Are
Black Swan Reading (“the App”) is developed and operated by Black Swan Learning LLC, an Arizona limited liability company. Throughout this policy, “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Black Swan Learning LLC.
2. Information We Collect
Information we do NOT collect from children:
- We do not collect, store, or maintain personal information from children under 13.
- We do not require children to create accounts or provide personal details to use the App.
- We do not use cookies, analytics trackers, or advertising identifiers targeted at children.
- We do not serve advertisements of any kind.
Information processed during App use:
- Text submitted for speech synthesis: When a user submits text through the App’s reading features, that text is transmitted to Microsoft Azure Speech Services to generate spoken audio. This text is processed in real time and is not associated with any individual user identity. We may cache the resulting audio on our servers to improve performance and reduce redundant processing. No user-identifiable information is attached to cached audio.
- Text submitted for language analysis: Text may be processed by our server using natural language processing tools to provide grammatical analysis and word segmentation. This processing is stateless and no user-identifiable information is retained.
Information collected from purchasing adults:
- If you purchase the App through an app store (Apple App Store, Google Play, etc.), the app store — not us — processes your payment. We do not receive or store credit card numbers or payment details.
- If you contact us via email or our website, we may retain your name and email address to respond to your inquiry.
3. How We Use Information
The limited information described above is used solely to:
- Provide the App’s core reading instruction features (text-to-speech, word analysis)
- Improve App performance through audio caching
- Respond to support inquiries from parents or guardians
We do not use any information for marketing, advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to delivering the App’s educational functionality.
4. Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party service in the course of normal operation:
- Microsoft Azure Speech Services: Text submitted for reading practice is sent to Microsoft Azure for text-to-speech conversion. Microsoft processes this data in accordance with their Privacy Statement and Trust Center policies. No user-identifiable information is transmitted to Azure — only the text to be spoken.
We do not use any other third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
5. Data Storage and Security
- Our backend server is hosted on Render, a cloud hosting platform with industry-standard security practices.
- Communication between the App and our server is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS.
- Cached audio data on our server is not associated with any individual user and contains no personal information.
- We do not maintain user accounts, profiles, or databases of personal information for child users.
6. Children’s Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
We take children’s privacy seriously. Our App is designed from the ground up to avoid collecting personal information from children.
- We do not require registration, login, or any personal information from child users.
- We do not collect persistent identifiers from children for any purpose other than supporting the App’s internal operations.
- We do not enable children to make personal information publicly available.
- We do not condition a child’s participation on disclosing more personal information than is reasonably necessary.
- A parent or guardian may contact us at any time to review, delete, or refuse further collection of their child’s information. As we do not collect personal information from children, there is generally no stored data to review or delete.
7. Parental Rights
Parents and guardians have the right to:
- Review any personal information we may have collected from their child (we collect none)
- Request deletion of any such information
- Refuse to permit further collection of information from their child
- Contact us with any questions or concerns about our privacy practices
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information provided below.
8. Data Retention
Because we do not collect personal information from child users, there is no personal data to retain or delete. Cached audio files on our server are non-personal data and may be retained indefinitely to support App performance. Support correspondence from adults is retained as needed to provide assistance and may be deleted upon request.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Effective Date” at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. If we make any changes that materially affect how we handle children’s personal information, we will provide prominent notice and obtain any required parental consent.
10. California Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, you may have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Because we do not collect personal information from child users and collect only minimal information from adult purchasers, these rights are generally not implicated by normal use of the App. You may contact us to make any privacy-related request.
